Ever since 1874 when Mathias Day built Palmetto House (the city’s first hotel in what was then called Daytona), the “World’s Most Famous Beach” has been off and running as a prime locale to soak up sun and chow down on gems from the sea, steaks and other hearty fare. Ocean Walk Village, a redevelopment complex of shops, entertainment and resort facilities, teems with trendy spots like the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Adobe Gila's Margarita Fajita Cantina and Cold Stone Creamery, all dishing up plenty of fun worthy of a town renowned for automotive speed. Daytona Beach also thrives on informality, never more so than at spots like Main Street’s Froggy’s Saloon (“Get here early, get you a spot. Froggy makes sure you don’t wait for a shot”), or the historic Boot Hill Saloon, across from the town cemetery (“Order a drink and have a seat. You’re better off here than across the street”). In nearby Ormand Beach, the famed Iron Horse Saloon has pool tables and a python pit, and communities such as Port Orange boast favorites like Aunt Catfish’s on the River, with seductive cinnamon rolls and a blue jeans Sunday brunch.
